Havana Club 7 Anos Rum – Updated & Resolved

Original Post

I just compared my Cuban bought Havana Club 7 to Tesco bought Havana Club 7. Unfortunately it is not the same. The Cuban 7 is smooth and delightful. The Tesco UK market version is harsh and burns the throat.

I will not be buying Havana Club 7 in this country unless I know it’s made for the Cuban market. Possibly in London At Soho Wine, Gerry’s or Royal Mile. I hope Havana Club don’t get away with shipping sub par Rum to the UK for long!

*Update* 1st October 2013

Having posted this blog entry on the facebook page for Havana Club UK, they have contacted me to express their concern over the difference in quality that I experienced. They would like me to send them the Lot numbers of each of the bottles so they can investigate this further.

I’ve been a fan of the 7 year old since being recommended it in 2008 by the good folks at Soho Wine. Having been to Cuba and visited the Havana Club museum in Havana I feel a strong connection to the Rum and was delighted when it was available in Tesco at a very reasonable price. Obviously my delight was short lived as it didn’t taste nearly as good as I thought it should. I confirmed this with friends by directly comparing it with some of my Cuban bought 7 year old.

It is fantastic that Havana Club UK have expressed concern over my findings and are going to look in to this. They have removed my post on Facebook and I can understand why.

I shall report back when I hear more.

*Update* 14th October 2013

I just had a response from Havana Club UK. They have checked the Lot numbers and established that there is a two year gap between the two bottles. I can believe this as I bought the original in March 2012.

They cannot explain why my two bottles taste so different but stress that, “Every single drop of Havana Club consumed across the world is made in the same way and in the same place by our Maestros Roneros who take enormous pride in ensuring the highest levels of quality and consistency.” They also mention that, “As we are sure you already know, there will always be slight variances between different batches of rum and whilst it is difficult to ascertain exactly why…”

From a customer service point of view they have kindly listened to my option and investigated it. I feel the only true way to resolve this would be to take a bottle from Tesco to Cuba and do a blind fold tasting test with a bottle at Havana Club with some locals. This is unlikely to happen any time soon.

In the mean time Havana Club UK have offered by way of apology to deliver me a bottle. I graciously accepted.

Caution Hot Water!

If you owned a restaurant and needed to explain that the water in the toilet is very hot. Besides the text what simple graphic would you use to highlight this?

OS X Mountain Lion

I’ve been given the task of updating all our Macs to Mountain Lion version 10.8.3. This doesn’t seem too tricky, i just have to update the older OS’s to 10.6.8 first so they can then be updated to Mountain Lion as currently they are Snow Leopard.

Once they are done I’ll download the latest OS from the App Store and put it on one of the less used macs to see if everything still works. Hopefully it’ll be fine and I’ll then roll it out on to the rest.

The only tricky part is wanting to only download the update once as opposed to having to download it to each machine (it’s 4 GB!). Hopefully I can find a work around.
